Fiddler on the Roof (July 2014)

FIDDLER ON THE ROOF is a musical theatre tradition and winner of 10 Tony Awards which debuted in 1965. Set in the little Russian village of Anatevka in 1905, the story centers on Tevye, a poor dairyman, and his five daughters. With the help of a colorful and tight-knit Jewish community, Tevye tries to protect his daughters and instill them with tradition in the face of changing social mores and the growing anti-Semitism of Czarist Russia. Rich in historical and ethnic detail, the universal theme of tradition cuts across barriers of race, class, nationality and religion, leaving audiences crying tears of laughter, joy and sadness.

Paul Warshauer (center) presents a Sabbath ceremony outside on the lawn before Friday’s show. Members of the cast, in costume, joined him to learn about the Jewish Sabbath which begins on Friday evening with a blessing over candles, wine and Challah, a special braided bread. Betti Kamolz performed the blessing over the candles.
